Privacy Policy

VanCityGuide ("we", "us") is an independent editorial site run by Cenk Karakuz in Vancouver, British Columbia. This policy explains what data we collect, why, and what choices you have. We keep it short and plain because that's the point. We are subject to Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and BC's Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA).

What we collect

Analytics. We use Google Analytics 4 to understand which pages are read and how visitors move through the site. This sets cookies and processes data such as your rough location (city/region), device and browser type, referring page, and the pages you view. We look at aggregate trends, not individuals.

Advertising. We display ads through Google AdSense on some pages. Google and its partners may use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this and other sites. You can opt out of personalised advertising in your Google Ad Settings.

Newsletter. If you subscribe, your email address is stored and delivered through Beehiiv, our newsletter platform. We use double opt-in (you confirm via a link) and you can unsubscribe from any issue. We don't sell, rent, or share the list.

Reader submissions. If you submit a price report or a restaurant tip, we store what you send (the submission content and, if you provide it, your name/email for follow-up) in our Supabase database. Approved submissions may be published without your contact details. Uploaded photos are stored in Cloudflare R2.

What we don't collect. We don't ask for or store financial information, government IDs, or passwords. We don't build advertising profiles ourselves.

Third-party services we rely on

We use a small set of reputable providers, each with its own privacy policy: Google (Analytics, AdSense), Beehiiv (newsletter), Supabase (database), Cloudflare R2 (image storage), Vercel (hosting), Resend (transactional email), and Stay22 (which turns some accommodation links into affiliate links). Booking links you follow are governed by the destination site's own policy.

Cookies

Cookies are used for analytics and advertising as described above. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings; the site still works, though some features and ad relevance may change.

Your choices and rights

You can unsubscribe from the newsletter at any time, opt out of personalised ads via Google's settings, and block cookies in your browser. Under PIPEDA/PIPA you may request access to, or deletion of, the personal information we hold about you (for example, a newsletter subscription or a submission). Email us and we'll handle it.

Children

This site is intended for adults planning a move to or a visit to Greater Vancouver. It is not directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their personal information.

Changes

If we change this policy we'll update the date at the top. For material changes we'll note it on the site.
