Crescent Beach sits on the shallow, protected waters of Boundary Bay in the far southwest corner of Surrey. It's a small, old-fashioned beach community built around a cluster of original waterfront cottages from the early 20th century, most of which have been renovated into permanent homes over the past few decades. Because the beach is inside the bay, the water is unusually calm and the tide goes out a very long way — during a low tide you can walk nearly a kilometre across the sand.

The main attractions are the beach itself, the Blackie Spit area at the north end (which is one of the best bird-watching spots in Metro Vancouver, especially during spring and fall migrations), the long wooden pier, and a handful of excellent fish-and-chips and ice cream spots along the waterfront. There's no boardwalk in the commercial sense — the village feel is low-key and residential.

Crescent Beach is about 45 minutes from downtown Vancouver by car, and closer to 90 minutes by public transit with a transfer. That makes it quiet even on sunny weekends compared to the beaches in Vancouver proper. For newcomers who want to show family from overseas an actual West Coast beach without fighting crowds, this is the best one in the region you've never heard of.

How to get there

By car from Surrey City Centre, Highway 99 south then west on 24 Avenue to the beach — about 35 minutes. By transit, take the 351 from Bridgeport station in Richmond to South Surrey Park & Ride, then the 362 local bus — expect at least an hour.
