Westminster Pier Park is the city's best civic win of the past fifteen years. For most of the 20th century the downtown New Westminster waterfront was industrial — log booms, freight terminals, and a CNR rail corridor that cut residents off from the Fraser River. The 2012 opening of Pier Park changed that: a 2.75-hectare linear park with a wide paved promenade, a sand volleyball court, a children's play zone, a small urban beach, and a 680-metre boardwalk pier that extends out over the river itself. It's now the main outdoor attraction in downtown New West and a genuinely excellent free way to spend an afternoon.
The views are the real draw. From the pier you look directly across the Fraser at Surrey, up-river toward the Pattullo Bridge (being replaced with a new crossing that's due to complete in 2025), and down-river to the Port Mann Bridge and the mountains beyond. Sunsets from the pier are consistently among the best in Metro Vancouver — the Fraser is wide here, and the urban skyline behind you catches the last light. On summer evenings the park fills up with families, cyclists, and the downtown condo crowd.
The park connects by walking path to the River Market at Westminster Quay (5 minutes west) and to the SkyTrain network via Columbia station (3 minutes inland). There's no admission, no parking fee on the weekend metered stretches after 6 PM, and the boardwalk pier is lit after dark. For a waterfront walk with minimal tourist crush, Westminster Pier Park beats most of the better-known Vancouver waterfronts.
How to get there
A 3-minute walk from Columbia SkyTrain station on the Expo Line — walk south down 4th Street to the waterfront. Free parking on metered stretches after 6 PM on weekends.
